A Change Only Starts When You Do

The Scientific name for the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake is Crotalus Pusillus. It lives in west-central Mexico. The snake eats mice, small birds, and other small animals. Its role in the ecosystem is to get rid of smaller animals. It is almost endangered because of hunting and climate change. I think that everyone should leave them alone if they see them in the wild. The picture shows you that all their habitat consists of dry forest and on mountains and shows you how the snake blends in with the surroundings by its sandy colors.

On December 28th, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 was signed into law due to the efforts of President Nixon. President Nixon declared conservation efforts in the United States aimed toward preventing the extinction of species. The purpose of the ESA is to protect endangered species.

In 1978 congress amended the ESA by permitting federal agencies to take actions that may harm or jeopardize a listed species if their actions are approved by a federal committee.
The ESA hasn’t affected my animal because it only applies in the USA and not in Mexico. If the ESA applied in Mexico, then my animal’s habitats can be protected by the law. As a civilian we can protect this animal by not hunting it or destroying its habitat. The Mexican government should create a law protecting these animals as well as other endangered animals. Anyone violating the law should be penalized or face jail time. With Mexico creating a law protcting these animals we can increase their population and take them of the endangered/extinction list.

Crotalus Pusillus population: undetermined
In 2007 the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake was placed as endangered by the IUCN. It was placed on the list since its restricted range and loss of its habitat. The size of its population is unknown, and no further research is planned. Since there is not much information, the Tancitaran dusky rattlesnake could become extinct without anyone noticing. If there was a plan to continue to protect these animals, they may not become extinct.

Have you ever been bitten by a snake? The snake I am talking about could kill you if you were ever bitten by it. The name of this snake is the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake. The scientific name for the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake is Crotalus Pusillus. This snake is a sandy color and lives in west-central Mexico. It eats mice, small birds, and other small animals. Its role in the ecosystem is to get rid of smaller animals. The Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake is an endangered species and I am here to fix that.

The Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake is almost extinct because of hunting and climate change. These snakes are hunted by humans for there venom. The venom from this snake can be used to make medicine. Along with hunting and climate change deforestation has also helped to add them onto the extinction list. Builders are a major contributor to deforestation. They cut down a lot of trees when they are building homes and offices. By cutting down the trees they are destroying their habitats.

There are no current solutions in place for my animal. According to the IUCNs website "in 2007 the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake was placed as endangered by the IUCN". It was placed on the list since its restricted range. When they were placed on the list the number of their population was unknown. The size of its population is still unknown, and there is no further research planned to help increase the population of these snakes. Since there is not much information, the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake could become extinct without anyone noticing. If there was a plan to protect these animals, they may not become extinct and the population could grow.

In 1978 congress amended the ESA by permitting federal agencies to take actions that may harm or jeopardize a listed species if their actions are approved by a federal committee. The ESA has not affected my animal because it only applies in the USA and not in Mexico. If the ESA applied in Mexico, then my animal’s habitats can be protected by the law. TDR believes that one way to increase the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake population is to bred them in a snake only zoo and create laws enforcing penalties for killing them or destroying their habitat. These animals should be put on a protected list to help them grow their population. "By growing their population they will continue to provide medicine for humans stated Jakob Hallermann." Without these animals having someone to stand up and speak for them they will not survive.

Currently, the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake is very close to being extinct. Humans, deforestation, and climate change have negatively affected the population of these snakes. By having an ESA in Mexico it would help to protect this snake from becoming extinct. If the Tancitaran Dusky Rattlesnake habitats were protected by the law and creating zoos where they could be breed to increase their population. The only way to enforce the laws would be through penalties for destroying their habitats or killing them. With stricter laws and protection for these animals we can save them. They still help us humans by providing medicine so we should protect them and grow their population.
